Boho Chic Makes a Comeback

25 October 2014 by sabrina

We had a great time at the bridal trade fairs this year and saw some gorgeous gowns.  The trend that stood out for us was the move away from structured gowns (sorry lovers of fishtail styles!) and the advent of the flowing floaty fabric skirts of boho chic style.  Our favourite designer by far was the lovely Terry Fox.  Such attention to detail is rarely seen and the exquisite execution of hand embroidery just had us chomping at the bit to get more details!  Check out the newest collection at Love My Dress.  Tell us what you think of them too!

Most Popular Dresses from the Weekend

20 November 2013 by sabrina

Well our Eliza Jane Howell weekend was very busy and we found lots of brides their dream wedding dresses – congratulations ladies!

I thought I’d share with you the most popular dresses from this weekend – let us know what you think of them too!

Glenda by Eliza Jane Howell

By far and away, Glenda was the choice for most brides.  She has a very Jenny Packham-esque style and is so elegant with romantic flowing skirts.  We had the opal colour in for the weekend and this was very beautiful as a contrast to the Ivory of the other dresses.  Our Ivory store sample is winging her way to us as I type so she’ll be available for you ladies to try on very soon.

The other two that stood out as winners  were Daisy and Dorothy:

We had the lovely Daisy in blush as well as pearl and have to say that the blush version was stunning. The little puddle train really set it off and added a glamourous red carpet edge to the gown.

Here is our shop window with Dorothy, Daisy and Ginger on display :)

Embracing Art Nouveau

16 November 2013 by sabrina

Following on the back of the Art Deco movement in bridal the next trend is Art Nouveau.  Beautiful organic and feminine shapes are the statement fashion for the coming season.

Dresses are sinuous with flowing skirts and delicate floral lace details.  Accessories are following suit and we’ve got the look book from one of our accessory designers Richard Designs to share with you.

We hope you like their style :)  We particularly like the feather shrug on the front cover but sadly this is just for show and not for sale – boo!

Dress of the Week – Eliza Jane Howell

9 November 2013 by sabrina

Here we are again a week before our fab Eliza Jane Howell event.  Our favourite dress this week is Glenda.

So beautifully elegant and stylish with a generous sprinkling of the sparkly stuff that we love this brand for :)

This will be one of our stock dresses come January but will be available for you to view in the fab new colour ‘Opal’ on Saturday and Sunday next week.  We hope you like it as much as us!

Dress of the Week – Eliza Jane Howell

26 October 2013 by sabrina

In the lead up to our exclusive event on 16-17 November I thought we’d focus on some of the scrummy designs from Gill Harvey’s Eliza Jane Howell Decadence Collection.

I have to say that I am nutty about these dresses – they are so different to anything else I’ve seen that’s available from your average high street bridalwear shop. Lucky for you we are not so average and strive to find the gowns that let you express your individuality.

For understated elegance and subtle sparkle, my pick of the week is Carole:

Perfect for a winter wedding, I just love the drape of the skirt and the fantastic cowl neckline at the back adding the extra drama.

The Dress Dilemma – Help is at Hand!

17 May 2013 by sabrina

Choosing your wedding dress can be a daunting experience. Some brides have dreamt of their special day since they were little girls and have it all worked out, but most women haven’t a clue what they want. The choice of gowns available is overwhelming. Everyone around a bride has got an opinion on what makes the ideal wedding dress – and they aren’t afraid to tell the bride-to-be exactly what she should be wearing!

Remember that it’s your day.  Well meaning friends and relatives will try to advise you but too many opinions can be confusing.  Before you go out and hit the shops with them, do your research online. Find out what styles appeal to you and make a note of things that you love and things you definitely don’t like. There are loads of websites to browse so you can get a real flavour of what is out there.

When you arrive at your appointments with the bridal boutiques be sure to ask for the styles you have seen and want to try on. Try to keep an open mind when you’re trying on gowns as the shop assistants will try to advise you on what styles will suit your figure best. Even if a gown hasn’t serenaded you from the hanger, it may actually look amazing once you get it on!

At Sylvan Angel Boutique we like to offer something different to the run-of-the-mill bridal styles.  Having spent time finding out what brides want, we have come to recognise that, whilst there are a vast number of bridal designers, generally the mainstream gowns available in most shops are very similar in style – and this is not what the discerning bride wants.  On the most special day of your life you want to feel unique; the most beautiful bride ever.  We can help to make this a reality.

Top Dress Trends for 2013 – The Sylvan Angel Guide

Lace – This fabric is here to stay. Since Kate Middleton’s wedding, long lace sleeves have been the thing to be seen in. Timeless elegance in Grace Kelly style; you can’t go wrong with a beautiful lace gown. A novel way to wear lace is to go for an overlay which can be removed from your gown later in the evening so you can accessorise with a glitzy belt and change your look for the reception. Claire Mischevani is a great designer to go for if lace is your thing. Her gowns ooze sophistication from every seam and the internal corset makes for a great fit.  A choice of dress shapes, lace overlays and flexibility on necklines and sleeve lengths means her gowns are fully customisable and it’s unlikely that you’ll get two brides with the same combination.  You can even go for a made to measure gown where you are fitted with a calico toile for a full couture experience.

Ruffles – This detailing was prevalent on the New York Bridal Week catwalk and makes for a very sculptural gown. Frothy layers of organza, tulle or chiffon give a very romantic yet playful feel to your look.  There are lots of designers adding this type of skirt to their gowns, we like the Rosa Couture styles Kayleigh and Bureta.

Beading and Sequins – If you are looking for vintage glamour then this is the style for you.  All over beading and sequin detail á la Elie Saab makes for a fabulously decadent gown. Our favourite affordable designer showing this style is brand new label Eliza Jane Howell. These are gorgeous Art Deco inspired evening style gowns and are perfect for weddings abroad as well as at home in the big city.

Colour – This is back in the wake of a number of celebrity weddings such as Justin Timberlake to Jessica Biel who chose pink for her gown. Designers have started bringing back delicate colours for brides to choose from this year. Blush, gold and caramel are all featured on the catwalks.  Pastels are very much in.

Floral Embellishments – beautiful roses made from chiffon, tulle and satin are decorating the gowns this season.  Who can resist such a feminine statement?

Other styles featured on the catwalks were asymmetric, off the shoulder and illusion necklines, dramatic and sexy backless gowns, short skirts and convertible gowns.

Of course, the ultimate luxury is to design and have your own gown made.  There are not many boutiques which offer a couture service such as this.  Sylvan Angel bridal boutique is unique in that all of our gowns are fully customisable and we can create bespoke jewellery and accessories in-house.  We also offer a full couture service so you can have a genuinely unique gown for your special day.  The best thing is it’s not as expensive as you might think!

If you’re struggling for inspiration and really want a professional no-obligation opinion or simply want to find a fabulous wedding dress – then give us a call on 01332 293888 to book an appointment for your free consultation.  If you simply want to browse our collections then feel free to drop in – you are very welcome!  Check our website for our opening hours at

Announcing our Competition Winner!

12 January 2013 by sabrina

As a first post on our blog it is brilliant to be able to give out some great news!

We have a wedding dress competition winner :)

Stacey Lowe entered our competition at the Derby Wedding Show in October 2012. We ran the competition to celebrate our boutique opening. Stacey was the lucky lady to have her name pulled from the hat at our opening party, beating loads of brides to win a fabulous wedding gown worth £2,500!

Stacey had a relaxed afternoon in the boutique trying different styles and has picked her gown (which of course we can’t reveal just yet in case H2B happens to be reading!). Lets just say it is stunning and she will look amazing on the big day! We can’t wait to get the pictures later in the year to showcase her gorgeous gown.

Here is the very happy Stacey after choosing her gown:
